The End Is Near – For Windows 10

Microsoft will officially retire Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. After that date, no further security updates will be provided for any devices running Windows 10—leaving systems vulnerable to cyber threats and compliance risks.

What This Means for Your Practice

Many computers running Windows 10 are eligible for a free upgrade to Windows 11 via Windows Update. However, the upgrade process can be time-consuming, and not all systems—or dental software—are compatible.

If your computer is over 5 years old, it’s likely time to replace it. Older systems often struggle to support newer versions of Windows, updated software, and modern hardware like scanners and cameras.

For dental offices, this is especially critical. Imaging tools such as oral scanners, x-ray systems, and capture software may not function properly on Windows 11. Compatibility must be confirmed with each software vendor.

Is Your System Ready?

Microsoft offers a PC Health Check App to determine if your device can run Windows 11. But hardware compatibility is only part of the equation—each software program used in your office must be verified with its developer.

Why You Must Upgrade

HIPAA requires dental practices to use up-to-date software, maintain current security patches, and regularly audit devices for vulnerabilities. Running outdated systems like Windows 7, 8, or 10 after support ends exposes your practice to:

  • Malware and ransomware
  • Data breaches
  • Insurance non-compliance
  • Regulatory penalties

Unpatched PCs are one of the most common entry points for attackers targeting small healthcare offices.
